fiN & friends @ The Green Door Store, Brighton...
The Green Door store is Brighton’s hottest new underground gig venue. Creeping through the wooden steel rimmed doors you’re greeted with a vivid overview of what’s happening over the next few months with a wall carefully plastered with smudged colours of bright band posters and flyers...
Presenting a grungy, alternative, slightly dank aura, The Green Door Store is reminiscent of a frosty war bunker/ cathedral backroom with the addition of gaudy plastic deer’s heads and dangling light bulbs attached to the walls and ceilings.
Essentially just a converted stone cellar under the arches of Brighton train station, this new venue promotes the finest underground and alternative bands on the scene... Could this news get any better?!
As my fittingly vintage boots clonked along the stone floor, past the bar and through the drawn curtain, I was greeted by a solid wall of radiating bodies. Looking to the right, amps upon guitars, thrown across Apple Macs, laced with drum kits, decorated with guitar cases topped off with keyboards and drum sticks casually balanced on top of each other... the thought of securely and carefully storing expensive equipment clearly wasn’t an issue. The vibrant, carefree, speakeasy vibes of Brighton instantaneously shone clear.
Brighton based band Run Young Lovers were first up, scrambling upon the tiny stage with uplifting enthusiasm and a bit of friendly banter. Offering TVS ears the endearing sounds of something that was fun, young, lively… but above all refreshingly exciting! Bouncy, indie- pop was their delectable sound of choice and all together made a bustling crowd even bushier. With an inkling of Two Door Cinema Club, these chaps most certainly offer a digestible, popular sound. Commenting consistently on the fact they offer FREE downloads, it would simply be criminal to not check them out:

Next up was Alice, it was shocking how quickly the crowd dispersed to go suck on a cigarette or refill their empty glass. With the glint of Run Young Lovers business cards scattered across every table, chair and stone tile on the floor it was easy to get distracted. Dispelling dulcet tones of Radiohead and minimal twinkling’s of Kings of Leon. This retro-cool band looked like they had freshly stepped foot out of the 60s, it was just a shame that most of the crowd seemed to have missed it.
Despite the brief quiet spell, headliners fiN managed to bring back the impetuous vibes and get the party pumping. Fresh off touring with Incubus, influential sounds of Nirvana, Lost Prophets and Fink oozed through. With a slick looking lead singer (Luke Joyce), excitable bass player (Kerry Lambert), incredibly smooth, leggy dancing guitarist (Johnny Garner) and scruffy hot drummer (the Taylor Hawkins-esque Simon Harding) their stage presence alone was rather impressive …but not only were they looking swagger, they sounded bad-ass too.
Residing from the realms of one of London’s now more trendier establishments, Wandsworth. fiN promote the underground and the free. Think about the box… yeah got it? Well fiN think way outside it. In times of warfare and recession they sing of celebrating life, remembering the good times, appreciating what you have and not letting the detritus of modern life drag you down. These guys are firm believers that when hunting for new bands online, people first tend to search on YouTube, thus leading the band to self-film 12 unique videos to accompany the releases of their singles...
Naturally tight, this band indicated no issues when it came to creating something beautiful. ‘Lucky You’ offered delicate sounds and soft, easy vocals to ease the crowd into battling with something a lot heavier. The vibrations from the bass drum, rocky guitar riffs and funky bass meant the mighty mosh pits began to occur at the front amongst a tipsy heckling crowd.
Lead singer Luke did a ‘Yannis Philippakis’ style climb upon the mighty speakers to jump dive into the crowd, delicately smashing audience members with the tip of his mic. Ultimately what impressed us the most (despite the clear love of what they were doing and believing in what they stand for) was the overwhelming pleasure we got to see that rock is still alive and BOOMING.
What’s more, the TVS team love nothing better than watching a band at close vicinity. Feeling the artists sweat flicker across your face may be a tad grimey, but god damn it, it’s awesome!
