Lovely interview about fiN! Some interesting questions being answered here - Maybe the first time it's been mentioned that the album would be named "The Artisan"? I hadn't heard it before!
Introducing...fiN by Ian Sandwell
Championed by the likes of XFM and Music Week, tours with the likes of Incubus and Feeder and having recently signed to Domino Publishing, indie rockers fiN have got a lot of momentum.
And it's no less than the Wandsworth four-piece deserve. Their new single 'Twenty Three / Eve' - released on April 16th through the band's own label Artisan Records - is a musical feast of two halves: the former a belting rock out, the latter its more reflective sibling.
Ahead of a live date at London's Bush Hall on April 18th, fiN took time out of the studio - where they are currently working on their debut album which is being mixed by Adrian Bushby - to chat to TMF about what we can expect from their debut effort.
What's your earliest musical memory?
Luke - Dancing around the living room with my Mum to a Motown compilation that she loved & played on repeat...
If you could hold a recording session with any five artists, who would you choose?
Drums - John Bonham
Bass - Colin Greenwood
Guitar - Billy Corgan
Vocals - Eddie Vedder
Keys/vocals - John Lennon
You want to describe your music to a stranger on the street, who do you compare yourself to?
We try not to compare ourselves, but people say we sound somewhere between Muse, dEUs, Radiohead, Pearl Jam & Coldplay.
You are going to live on a desert island for a year, which three albums do you take with you?
Michael Jackson - Bad
Radiohead - OK Computer
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Everyone has a defining music moment, one that lives on in the memory, what is yours?
Luke - The first time I heard Nevermind, at school with my friends and it changed my life right there at that very moment.
What is the best gig you've ever been to and why?
Jonny - Arctic Monkeys at Reading in the tiny tent just before they blew up.
Luke - The Strokes at Reading when Julian had a broken leg & still managed to be incredible.
Simon - Muse at Wembley Arena... that's when I knew I wanted to be in a band.
Kerry - Tool at Brixton Academy as it was so intense.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
We want to headline Reading Festival main stage...
If we were to look at your MP3 player, what is the most embarrassing track or album that we'd find?
Guilty pleasures throughout are - Take That, Katy Perry, Bon Jovi, Alphabeat... too many to mention in one interview [laughs]
How would you sell your new single 'Twenty Three / Eve' to us?
Luke - We released these together to juxtapose our record. 'Twenty Three' is a balls to the wall rock song about my father. I love him, but it took a long time to realise it. 'Eve' is our dirty, sexy, dark, string-lead track about the awkwardness of fucking for the first time.
What can we expect from your debut album?
Our record is going to be called The Artisan. A handmade record, recorded over eight months of our lives in Wandsworth. It's our celebration over adversity. Song-wise, it's a mixed bag of indie-rock-epic-dark tunes. Being our first record, its influences come from anything from Smashing Pumpkins to Phoenix.
What's next for fiN?
Our goal this year is to be a band that everybody has heard of in some way. We plan to be on the road non-stop for the next year! We have already started to write tracks for the second album, as you have to keep pushing forward - "all sharks are born swimming".
'Twenty Three / Eve' is out on April 16th through Artisan Records. To find out more about fiN, visit their official Facebook - www.facebook.com/finUk - and Twitter - @finuk
