INTERVIEW: fiN.
With a spontaneous performance at Occupy London, a European tour with Incubus, openings for both Mona and the Kooks, things are certainly on the up for fiN. But who are they? SQ met fiN in a dingy London pub to find out.
Hailing from Wandsworth South London; fiN are a great indie-pop band in waiting. Complete with a Mark Ronson doppelganger, scruffy but loveable band members and an opening collection of songs that any indie band would be proud of.
fiN are destined for great things in 2012. Having their musical approach constantly likened to a whole host of bands, including the legendary Stone Roses, surfer band Vampire Weekend and psychedelic rock band MGMT. You could be forgiven for pigeonholing them as amateurs, but fIN have proceeded to create a sound that is totally unique and distinctive to them. With those influences they were always destined to be more than your stereotypical indie band.
We live in an age of endless band reunions, re-releases and X Factor, it comes as a refreshing change to see an indie band that are really trying to break the mould. Their recent singles releases personify this, in a time where download rules the roost, bands struggle to get their music noticed by the public due to the nature of the internet.
Yet fiN collectively decided to complicate matters further and release each single one at a time on 7” vinyl. Their reasoning? “We went with some record labels, didn’t work, so we thought nah will do this ourselves. We made a conscious decision to not even release it on CD. All of us remember growing up with our dad’s vinyl collections, and just loving it. We wanted people feel like they’re part of it, not just a kid sitting in front of the screen.” Simon, group drummer, expresses enthusiastically.
"We want to be the biggest band in the world, and we’re going to work as hard as we can to get to that point…"
The bands hard working and DIY approach paid off in great dividends when Incubus personally extended an invite their way to tour with them across Europe. Something the suave and confident lead singer Luke spoke about: “It was a dream come true, just to get the opportunity to play with a band that is that good, was incredible, it still hasn’t sunk in.”
It seems one night from the tour that meant everything to Kerry, bassist, was the show in Alexandra Palace, North London. “That gig holds a special place in my heart, it was the first show we’d played of that size (10,000 people), and it was the show I’ve always dreamed of playing. I went as far to the front of the stage as I could and scanned the audience from left to right just to take the sight of all those people in. I’ll always remember that show.”
You could be forgiven for thinking that it was all champagne and groupies for the band whilst they were on tour with Incubus but that certainly isn’t the case. The group were still breaking their backs and sweating blood: “We toured with Incubus, in a little shitty fucking bus, we were sleeping upright, there was no hotels, no lush swimming pools – we’re just a really hard working band.” The London born vocalist expresses in a very passionate tone.
So with a European tour with Incubus under their belt, what’s next for fiN? What is their primary ambition? “We want to be the biggest band in the world, and we’re going to work as hard as we can to get to that point, it’s not impossible, anywhere you end up is going to be better that somewhere comfortable.”
Say what you want about fiN, but they cannot be accused of lacking ambition, certainly one to look out for in 2012.
